What is Dialysis

Types of Dialysis :

Dialysis serves as a substitute for the natural function of the kidneys in individuals with kidney failure. The process involves removing waste and excess fluids from the blood and maintaining a balance of electrolytes. Your treating Nephrologist will explain & decide which types of dialysis you need. There are the following types of dialysis:

1. Hemodialysis:

• In hemodialysis, blood is pumped out of the body to an artificial kidney machine, which filters out waste and excess fluid.

• The filtered blood is then returned to the body.

• Hemodialysis is typically performed at a dialysis center or hospital.

Types of Hemodialysis:

In-center hemodialysis: Dialysis sessions are performed at a dialysis center.

Home hemodialysis: Dialysis sessions are performed at home, often with a machine the patient operates.

• Hemodialysis requires a special vascular access,

such as an arteriovenous (AV) fistula or graft, or a catheter.

2. Peritoneal Dialysis:

• In peritoneal dialysis, a dialysate fluid is introduced into the abdomen through a catheter, where it filters waste and excess fluid.

• The dialysate is then drained out and replaced with fresh dialysate.

• Peritoneal dialysis can be done at home and is generally more flexible than hemodialysis.

Types of Peritoneal Dialysis:

Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD): The patient manually performs exchanges (filling and draining the abdomen) throughout the day.

Continuous Cycler-Assisted Peritoneal Dialysis (CCPD): A machine, called a cycler, is used to

automatically perform exchanges, often at night while the patient sleeps.

• Dialysis is an essential need for a person suffering from chronic kidney disease, and there are several dialysis centres in Delhi NCR. A patient requiring dialysis can consult a Nephrologist at Swastik clinic & discuss related questions about dialysis.
