Renal Replacement

What is the meaning of renal replacement?

Renal replacement therapy is a term used to encompass life-supporting treatments for renal failure. Renal replacement therapy replaces nonendocrine kidney function in patients with renal failure. Techniques include intermittent hemodialysis, continuous hemofiltration and hemodialysis, and peritoneal dialysis.

Once it is confirmed that renal replacement therapy will be necessary, the patient and his doctor should discuss the benefits and disadvantages of the three types of renal failure therapy:

  • Hemodialysis (In House care or in Hospital)
  • Peritoneal dialysis at home (CAPD/APD)
  • Renal Transplantation (living donor or diseased organ donor, known as cadaveric donor).

A Renal Transplant may not be considered if the patient has Tuberculosis or a recent history of cancer, advanced heart, lung or liver disease and if the patient is a smoker, alcohol or drug dependant.

The surgery takes approximately three to four hours. The donor kidney will be placed in the lower abdomen, the blood vessels from the donor's kidney will be connected to the patient body and the ureter from the donor's kidney will be connected to the patient bladder. Blood will start flowing through the new kidney and it begins its function of filtering.
